I'll add to the confusion. Where I live in Eastern Ontario it's historically called "Upper Canada" since in the early days they started at the east coast then travelling west was considered going "up". East coast would be "lower" Canada. Some things still stick and some people refer going west to Toronto as going "up" and going east to Montreal as going "down".
