I'm sure they'd love to hire more $40-50 techs that they can bill out at $200.   That's a pretty good margin for the dealership even after you figure in the benefits and costs associated with employing the tech.


I'm not ready to open a shop but I try really hard to completely avoid places with exorbitant shop rates.   

Thankfully there are still some dealerships and independents around here that do really good work and have shop rates that are somewhat reasonable.
