ips stand for iron pipe size. Irrigation pipe can be 2 different outside diameters. PIP stand for pipe in pipe and it is somewhat smaller in outside diameter than ips.
PIP stands for plastic irrigation pipe. It was originally marketed as a replacement for aluminum irrigation pipe, which was sized by its OD rather than ID like iron pipe.
