Subject: Seed to soil contact. Case 1240 planter

Southern IA
We are seeing a problem with our corn stand this year. Some places in the field have a perfect stand and other places the stand isn’t so good. We dig the seed up and it’s just lying in dry dirt. We think part of our problem might be that we aren’t getting a good seed/soil contact. We have a Case 1240 12/23 pivot fold planter and plant into tilled ground. The units are set on the middle slot for down pressure and we have the smooth closing wheel discs. Do we need to increase the pressure on the row units and closing wheels? Do we need to switch out the smooth closing discs for notched ones? Do we need to look into replacing the lead disc opener? Was just wanting some opinions on what we need to look into for next spring.
