thanks chris. so we may temporarily pull it of the tractor and use the utv to run around and do the borders. we use terrastar c pro...no rtk here and spotty cell service.
Having good Boundaries is not explicitly required but does offer advantages in many situations so we feel it is worth the effort.
My Great Nephew made new Outer Boundaries a couple years ago with an InCommand 1200. The GPS source is an Ag Leader 7500 with the TerraStar Pro C unlock and a subscription. We wanted to revamp our Boundaries due to various changes. He was able to do this in an early Spring due to an open Winter.
In the past, I have temporarily installed an Ag Leader system in my Polaris Ranger for such tasks. For doing the Boundaries this time we didn't bother since the system was already in the planting tractor and we don't have many obstacles near our Boundaries. Although using the tractor might have been a bit overkill, it was just plain easier to use it.
If there were no obstacles or line fences on the Boundary, the operator could just straddle the actual Boundary. However, power poles, line fences, trees etc. might be involved and it would be desirable to drive beside the Boundary rather than straddle it. With older Ag Leader displays, I would enter in a GPS offset to allow me to drive inside the field parallel to the desired Boundary. This could get confusing and I had to remember to remove that offset when I finished creating the Boundary to return to more "normal" uses.
The InCommand 1200 and likely other displays, has a feature to introduce an offset just for the Boundary creation process. This offset only applies to creating that Boundary so when the Boundary is completed and saved, no GPS offset juggling is needed.
When creating a new Boundary the operator has the option of entering in a Boundary offset distance and direction (left/right). Since the tractor we were using has front duals, we measured the distance from the outer edge of the left front outer dual to the centerline of the tractor. Then we could drive around inside the field with the outer edge of the left front dual on the desired new Boundary. The new Boundary shows on the screen so it is very easy to determine if things are working properly. Once the Boundary is complete and appears to be correct, the operator can stop the process and save that Boundary which is then associated with that field name.
As a Boundary is being created, the Boundary is shown on the screen and a flashing line is shown from your current location back to your starting point. This means that it may not be necessary to drive the final side of the field. For example, if the field is a rectangle you might start on the North West corner and drive East, then turn and drive South, then turn and drive West to the corner. At that point the flashing portion of the line would be connected back to the starting point which may be what you want. You could stop and save that Boundary if you wish. You could decide to drive that last side if you wish since it may not be straight.
When creating a Boundary it is possible to Pause the process, drive around an obstacle (fallen tree that you were unaware of) return to the Boundary and push the Pause icon again to continue the Boundary. The system will fill in the gap where you drove around the tree with a straight line. We have used this with fields where the edges are very straight. We start to make the Boundary and purposely Pause it, drive to the other end and when close get lined back up again and push Pause again. The system then fills in a straight line between the Pause points which makes that entire side a nice straight line.
