To be fair, actually sinking one is far less of a threat than temporary incapacitation. Case in point, look at the deck fires suffered by Oriskany, Forrestal, and Enterprise back in the 1960s. Hundreds of sailors killed, dozens of aircraft lost, and expensive repairs in drydock taking them off the line for months.
