| I’m going to be planting a Timothy grass, meadow brome mix this coming spring. It’s irrigated ground and I’ve seemed to have the best luck with spring plantings but haven’t grown that much grass. This ground is certified organic and herbicides won’t be an option.
I had planned to use a cover of 65 lbs forage barley and 4-6 lbs Italian ryegrass. My seed guy is telling me it won’t work. He says the annuals will take over and is recommending 15 to 20 lbs of barley. I’ve gone with rates that low in the past when seeding alfalfa and ended up with a cutting of two ton of weeds and a weaker stand of hay. I regularly plant 80 lbs of oats with 20 lbs alfalfa and that makes fantastic stands for me. I told the seed guy that and he said the grass won’t compete like the alfalfa will. | |
