west Nebraska northeast Colorado | Little papa, Yes, the Nebraska system of financing schools is a mess. But a unicameral system of government isn't the problem. State legislatures (both senate and house) have to be elected by population. This is the result of of a US Supreme Court ruling from years ago. A two house system will still mostly represent Lincoln and Omaha.
On a related issue, did you know the special tax session called by our Republican governor last summer took away the income tax credit you could claim for taxes paid to local schools for the 2023 tax year? Yes! It was changed to a direct credit on the property tax statements starting with the 2024 property tax statements-but the credit that we could have claimed for 2023 taxes just vanished into thin air! |
