N.E. MT | All experience based not science. You want F1 cross cows out crossed to charolias bulls. Sim-angus or Hereford/angus cow bred back white thus maximizing heterosis. Calves not only will be the biggest you wean but also they seem to stay healthier in the feedlot. The problem is with all the cab programs no packers want your creamy colored calves some with pink noses that are technically only 25% angus.
Breeding f1 on both sides creates little hybrid vigor because genetically they are the same thing. Then, over time, you end up with a group of cows that are blended viscosities of bloodlines and it just destroys your herd genetically. I’ve never understood how the sim/angus guys sell so many high dollar bulls. Sure they look great and the performance is amazing being f-1’s but little heterosis is passed into your own calves. Mud bloods, In theory if you always had half blood bulls and half blood cows you would always have half blood calves but in my experience it doesn’t work that way.
