WCWI | Don't give up!
I come from a farming background but did not have a farm to "step into" persay. I started with 13 acres I rented from my mom in 2013 and grown to a decent sized operation I like to think.
I started custom harvesting in 2015 and still do that today which has gained me some ground but has also gained me cash flow, more experience, ability to purchase more/newer/bigger equipment, and exposure to the neighborhood to hopefully be seen.
What has helped me is being a decent person, I have not got any ground by trying to rent land out from another tennant. Build relationships with other farmers, big and small. A "BTO" was cutting acres one year and he gave me the contract (with landlords approval) to take over.
You will have to farm allot of the "crappy" pieces for awhile, rent what you can and you will probably have to pay more than what you should but as years past you can get to being more choosy and hopefully the better pieces will come. As others have said mention to people or send a letter letting them know your interested in renting land. Tell them your not looking to start a land war but if they're looking to change tell them what you can offer.
If you would like to chat more my email is good.
