Yes, use the grates as wildcat1 says. I have a light steel grate cover that I have never used, was able to clean up the sample without it. Come and get it if you want.
In sunflower, you need the cover (ripple tin) on the front 12 inches of the AF chaffer. Even corrugated box cardboard wired on works for a long time. This makes a big difference in SF.

Have seen the same thing,crop and harvest conditions can make for a dirty sample that you can do nothing about.
