Nevada, Iowa | Thanks for the info, still very interested in this unusual crop. Seeding into a standing crop really worked well but added to the cost considerably. I have daydreamed about ways of metering it into the chaff spreader on the combine, that would ease my concerns of another wet harvest situation.
Seems that rye required the least amount of moisture to grow of any crop I have ever dealt with. I swear it would sprout from condensation from a rock. If I were going to do it again, I think I would reduce seeding rates just to experiment. I think that 3/4 to 1 bushel would still give a lot of cover. I don't know if the lower rates would reduce the allelopathic effect, though.
