Open the drain plug on the pump and drain out the tanker. That's all we've ever done. Even a little water in the pump won't hurt as long as it's not so full that it will burst.

We use our spreaders all winter and just open the pump drain plug at night. There have been times when someone forgot -- we never cracked a pump....the power washer works well to thaw them out.
