NCKS | I'm trying to do a better job with my fertility on our irrigated corn.
How do I go about using soil tests and tissue tests in season to determine how much specifically nitrogen on with our topdress or a late fertigation pass? Boron, zinc and other micros as well. Do I need corresponding soil tests in season with the tissue tests? Can I make a decision on tissue tests alone? We're still relatively new to irrigation, but starting to get a fair amount of it and I'd like to start managing it better. Any input is appreciated, Thanks.
We usually run 75lbs N with ATS, 10-34-0 and zinc surface banded with the planter, 35lbs N with our chem burndown, 35lbs N with our planter chasing residual chem pass then finish off with 50lbs of N and some S with the dry spreader when the corn is 3-4ft tall. This year everything but the planter pass will have generic agrotain on it.
This is all based on "I want every part of the field to have at least enough for 200bph" and nothing else. Based off of the average of our soil tests Kstate says we only need 190lbs N to grow 240bu corn, which is our pie in the sky yield aspiration on our "better" pivots. So I think we are putting plenty on for our 500gpm wells... | |
